Configuring and poking around the Adtran is menu-based, just like an Ascend. There's lots of menus to get lost in, but other than that it's pretty easy to get around.
One important thing in the setup is the Map for the Dial Plan. This is a potentially sophisticated way for the Adtran to direct resources by the time of day or by other conditions. For this, the simplest dial plan works. "Just Always On" works fine.
After doing that stupid little maps chore, you can setup the Dial Plan. Basically, the Adtran has all these various ports on the back, and this is where you tell the Adtran what these different ports are and how they are used. Some ports will be Network ports (going to the telephone network), and other ports will be User ports (going to CPE). This tells the adtran what you've got and how it will be used.
Under Network term, you see that we have the BRI lines that come from the telephone network. The slot is which slot the card is plugged into in back, the port is which port on the card which is plugged into the slot, and the Interface config is where you program in the stuff BRI lines need.
Put in the switch type, phone number, and spid as you'd put in like any other piece of ISDN BRI equipment. Be sure to type it correctly. I also disabled data calls, as BA often does not get voice and data hunting working well together. Our pure ISDN customers call into a pm2i, and eventually, most of them will be converted to our wireless service.
Back on the Dial Plan screen, we went into User term, and setup the PRIs which go into the PM3s. This is also where you'd choose PRI signalling instead of T1.
Lucent 5e as a switchtype is the same as ATT-5ESS on the PM3.
One more little important thing is to set the timing source. This is where you should select some network timing from a device connected to the telephone network. Otherwise things will be unreliable at best from a customer perspective. We chose to take the timing from the first port on the first BRI card, which I had plugged into slot-5.
Also after adding a card, you have to go into "Modules" and enable it,
under the "State" column.
That's it for configuring. Go over to the next page for neat information.
