Physical Setup

The Atlas Chassis has ethernet, serial, two T1/PRI ports, and LCD/keypad/LEDs for interfaces.

Most configuration is conveniently done at your computer via telnet. However, before that is done, you have to use the front LCD panel and keypad to enter basic stuff like the IP number, netmask, etc.. Then you can telnet into to do everything else. I do most of my work either from a terminal plugged into a portmaster telneted into the adtran, or via telnet from one of my workstations at the NOC or our business office.

On the back, you need to use the red T1 crossover cable, or a functional equivalent to connect the PM3 (or other access server) to the Adtran. I made up two crossover cables about a foot long using Cat-5 and RJ45 connectors. Only 4 wires are used in a traditional T1 circuit.

The BRI lines use 2 wires. Put them in the center of an RJ45 connector. In the photo on the main page, you'll see all the RJ45 BRI lines I have plugged into the back. Actually, the BRI cards come with a quantity of good cables, but I hate silver-satin wiring, and they weren't long enough for my application. I made some out of Cat-5.

The other box is a Corel Netwinder, and is not part of this project. It's just being used as an ethernet router to assist in renumbering.
